Eight-hundred and fifty-five million chickens are reared for their meat in the UK each year.
The majority of these chickens are reared to standards the RSPCA believe are unacceptably low.
However, people are starting to change their buying habits following our campaign which launched in January alongside programmes from Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
A new RSPCA poll shows that 73% of consumers said that since recently discovering standard chickens were farmed in poor conditions they now buy chickens that have had a better life.
Nearly three out of four people feel supermarkets should only sell higher welfare chicken such as Freedom Food, free-range or organic. This directly supports the RSPCA's January campaign asking people to sign a petition calling on supermarkets to sell only higher welfare chicken by 2010.
So far over 53,000 people have signed our petition - so thank you for your support.
