Dog Breed of the Week: Rottweiler

Wednesday November 19, 2008

The Rottweiler is a large, muscular dog with a commanding presence. This dilligent worker is also quite loyal and intelligent. Despite its powerful experience, the Rottie can be an affectionate and playful companion. Unfortunately the breed has gotten labeled by some as a "dangerous breed." The important thing to know is that any kind of dog can be dangerous, but proper training and socialization makes all the difference.

In my career I have met tons of extremely sweet Rotties and very few aggressive ones. Plus, those with "attitude" were usually just afraid or protective. The breed is definitely well-suited for hard work as a guard dog or other job. Personally, I adore Rottweilers and think they make terrific companions. How about the rest of you? Tell us all about your beloved Rott!

Vicktory to the Vick Pit Bulls!

Most of us remember the disturbing case of ex-NFL star Michael Vick's dog fighting ring and the subsequent confiscation of the surviving Pit Bulls. Thousands of people have donated their time and money to rescue and rehabilitate the surviving dogs. I think it is safe to say that this story has touched the hearts of all of us dog lovers.

Now, there is a new way these dogs are being honored. The Vicktory Dogs Wine Collection features portraits of 22 dogs rescued for the dog fighting ring. The wines are available through the Dog Lovers Wine Club, and 10% of each sale goes to the Best Friends Animal Society.

I am so glad to see a happy ending to this tragic story. These dogs deserved better and fortunately they got it!

Every dog needs some degree of basic grooming. Despite our shaky economy, a minor investment in some grooming supplies for at-home grooming can save you the expense of visiting a groomer or a "doggie spa."

Whether you are starting an at-home grooming routine or just putting together your holiday wish list, there are several newer, convenient products on the market today. Check out some of these great grooming supplies just featured in this slideshow by the The New York Times. While these products aren't exactly cheap, they really can save you money in the long run. Have you tried any of the featured products? If so, let us know what you thought about them.

Dog Breed of the Week: Bichon Frise

Wednesday November 12, 2008

I chose the Bichon Frise as the dog breed of the week because of the recent popularity of hypoallergenic dog breeds. Plus, this little cotton ball is a bundle of joy! The playful and happy Bichon is a popular dog breed, an affectionate companion and a great dog for kids.

If the Obama family wants a little dog, then the Bichon Frise might be the breed for them. As with most dog breeds, there are plenty of rescue groups - so, they can actually adopt one. Perhaps the breed would be right for you and your family. If the wonderful Bichon is already a member of your family, tell us all about it here! Also, consider submitting a photo of your beloved Bichon for a future gallery.
