The Great Pyrenees or Pyrenian Mountain dog is a large livestock guardian dog. It can measure from 25" to 32" at the shoulders, and can weigh up to about 150 lbs. It is principally white and may have some badger grey or tan usually around the ears and face. It originated in the Pyrenees mountains in the south of France in an area called the Basque region bordering on Spain. The dogs were used for guarding livestock against wolves, bears and other predators. Shepherds would leave them for days at a time without fear of loosing any livestock. The Pyr (as it is affectionately called) is a thinking dog and therefore does not excel in obedience, it is however a fierce guardian of family and flock. The Pyr has a double fur coat capable of withstanding very cold weather and extreme dampness. Its white coat makes it very visible at night and its extremely deep bark can carry for miles. Pyrs are generally not big eaters, and quite often will skip meals if they are not hungry. This is not cause for alarm as they WILL eat when THEY feel like it. The name IZARRA comes from a Basque liquer. For more information on this wonderful breed please E-Mail us at Izarra@direct.ca.
