Hoedown Gift Basket WinnersHoedown PHOTO ALBUM!

THANK YOU to everyone who made the 2008 Hoedown event such a huge success! Nearly 300 people attended, around 80 piggies had a well-piggy check-up, thanks to the wonderful staff of Carrollton West Pet Hospital, and we were able to raise around $2000!

Of course the need to continually raise funds, especially this time of year when intake is up and adoptions are down, continues, so please consider a special Donation:

or product purchase from our friend below, and know it is appreciated!

Lab Piggies Rescued!

from Rescue Director Julia Hinrichs: This spring, Texas Rustlers finally got to rescue 32 lab piggies from a local university. We had been contacted late last year regarding the piggies that the university was finished with and required re-homing - if they could not be re-homed the alternative was the CO2 chamber. All the piggies, with the exception of 4, had been used in behavioral testing; 1 was used as a mosquito feeder, and the other 3 were accidentally bred after the program had finished and not used for testing purposes. Thanks to Carla, we were able to able to load all the piggies into 2 cars and get them to the rescue around 5pm; it then took us nearly another 4 hours to set them all up. The caging we currently have them in is far from ideal, but better than what they had before. They do not eat veggies, they are reluctantly trying hay, and they are absolutely terrified - I have never met such scared piggies in all my life. We want to thank those who have already helped or offered to help. As you can imagine, these poor piggies are going to be with us a while. They need intensive care in the form of love and gentle handling, some have medical issues, 1 with an inner ear infection, 2 with hair loss and 1 with possible heart issues. All the lab piggies are pink-eyed whites!

If you would like to see the initial pictures of them.

If you would like to help, donations can be made with one click via Paypal below on this home page, or mailed to the address on the contact page. Please be sure to mention that the donation is for the Lab Piggies.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting and have adopted or fostered from us before please contact us.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting and have not adopted or fostered from us before, please complete either the foster or the adoption contract. Again, please specify that your interest is in the Lab Piggies.

If you would like to volunteer at the rescue, we require help cleaning cages, water bottles, food dishes, cutting nails etc. every Saturday between the hours of 9am and 5pm, if interested please contact us.

Did you know? Quite often, people think that all rescued piggies have been horribly neglected or abused. This is unfortunately true some of the time, but most guinea pigs at Texas Rustlers are given up due to children tiring of them, and they are perfectly healthy and well adjusted. In fact, our piggies are given attention by a qualified guinea pig veterinarian when needed, and are under the watchful care of Rescue volunteers, who feed them optimum diets which were often lacking in their former homes. Rescued piggies may be shy at first until they get used to their new, loving owners, but be assured they are well taken care of as they wait for their permanent homes.
