A Brief Introduction to the Boerboel

While the site is under construction, let me take a minute to introduce the Boerboel.

The Boerboel (or "Farmer's Dog" as roughly translated from Afrikaans, sometimes called a South-African Mastiff) is a powerful dog originating from South Africa, used for generations to protect the homesteads of early South African settlers. This dog has a somewhat complex lineage, but some of the origins seem to begin in the 1600's with the arrival of the first Dutch, French and British settlers and the accompanying Mastiffs, and includes lines from indigenous breeds, such as the Rhodesian Ridgeback.

In recent history (since 1983) the SABT/SABBA has been actively working to rate and improve the breed and track the lineage, and has been the registry of reference for the breed. However, there are three (??) other Boerboel registration associations in South Africa, and countless national and international organizations as well.

A Couple of the Historic SA Breeders:

Corma Buks Dopper Boerboels  -- A highly recommended breeder from South Africa, we have personally imported from Dopper and cannot say enough about the dedication, and quality of the breeding and dogs. This is a breeder that cares. They export to the US, Canada, Europe, etc. and are notable as one of the first breeders to do hip x-rays at 12 months, etc. before it became standard practice.

20080923 UPDATE: Dopper Boerboels has some very high quality dogs available. OK, I'm a bit biased, because I have bought my Boerboel from these people, and I'm very happy with him. :)
