This new service is the most cost effective and reliable artificial breeding technology currently available, and for the first time offers commercial sheep farmers a viable opportunity to fully exploit the genetic resource.
A) Merino farmers the chance to make the best use of the current genetic resource by selecting a few outstanding rams from the industry elite, whose characteristics attract market premiums. By using these rams extensively (eg: one ram per 1000 ewes) those superior genes are rapidly bred into the whole flock, and therefore generate extra income. Clients are already reporting dramatic genetic gains that in their opinion would have taken many years to achieve with natural mating. (see clients' comments) B) Farmers considering new breeds of sheep (East Friesian, Dorper, Damara Fat Tail etc) are using our programmes to achieve large numbers of first cross exotic lambs on the ground, at a much reduced price per lamb (including semen) than any other method. The experience in New Zealand has shown that it is much easier to obtain high market premiums, and production increases from the unique characteristics of new breeds, when concentrated larger numbers of first cross animals can be bred more quickly. |
