HEXHAM & NORTHERN MARTS

YOUNG FARMERS SUCKLED CALF WINTERING COMPETITION 2008/2009

Hexham and Northern Marts are running a Young Farmers suckled calf wintering competition, where any member of a Young Farmers Club in Northumberland , Cumbria or Co. Durham can buy a suckled calf at one of four Special Sales held at Hexham Mart in October. The calf must then be sold again at the Show and Sale on Friday 13th March 2009 . For the purpose of the competition Hexham & Northern Marts will finance the purchase of the calf with an interest free loan.

The winner of the competition will be the competitor whose calf leaves the greatest margin between the purchase and selling price. They will be awarded the J.S. Hubbuck Ltd Challenge Trophy and £100. The runner-up will receive £50.

There will also be a section for the Young Farmers Calves at the show in March where the calves will be judged in breed classes.  Prize money and rosettes will be awarded to class winners and of course the Overall Champion and Reserve.

In addition Hexham & Northern Marts intend to run a “Cattle Dressing Work Shop” on Saturday 28th February 2009 to give competitors some tips on cattle presentation prior to the sale.

Hexham and Northern Marts hope that such a competition, the first of its kind to be held in Northumberland, will give the future stockmen and women in the area the opportunity to experience buying, feeding and presenting cattle for sale without having to find the money to do so, and hopefully get a reasonable financial return.

Young Farmers are the future of the farming industry in this country and as livestock farming becomes more specialised stockmen and women become fewer. This competition offers members of the Young Farmers a chance to work with cattle when their own farming enterprise might not.

Hexham and Northern Marts would like to thank J. S. Hubbuck Ltd for their generous sponsorship of this competition.
