Horseback Riding: rides in the high Andes

Riding on horsebackRiding on horseback here is like living the odyssey of the Spanish conquistadors from almost 500 years ago. All the passes, landscapes, flora and fauna remain the same. Inhabited only by silent animals such as condors and pumas (mountain lion). The vegetation gets sparser the higher you ascend, finally reaching green summer pastures full of wild flowers and sparkling streams. There is no other way but horseback riding to travel here. The guides for these trips are Arrieros, cowboys, horsemen who run cattle herds over the Andes. They have learned the routes from their fathers and grandfathers before them. A musician usually travels with us.

Horseback rides in the Central Andes last from 1 to 12 days. On longer trips we camp in the mountains in well prepared campsites and spend the evening around the fire. This is the perfect horse riding trip for those who enjoy outdoor recreation and soft adventure, or for family vacations. No previous experience of horseback rides is needed.

Trips can be tailored to suit you and your group, and we also have regular departures for specific trips, both in the central cordillera for horse riding near Santiago and in Pucon or Patagonia.

Ride on horseback along trails in the high cordillera of the Andes near Santiago in Chile. Our horse rides start up there at around 2000 metres (about 7000 feet), with no long preliminary trail up through the pre-cordillera. The views are always unimaginably spectacular and, depending on the time of year, you will also find myriad exotic wild flowers , snow and always water to bathe and refresh after the day's riding, whether it be an ice blue lake or rushing streams. The beauty is truly indescribable. In all of time very few people have been there before, even though now, in addition to the local arrieros, or horsemen, a few intrepid tourists are beginning to find these trails. There are mountaineers and walkers, but we rarely encounter them. Horse riding is the easiest way to access these high mountains , where there are nearly always trails, made in the ancient of days by arrieros (horsemen) driving cattle to and from Argentina, and riding up to care for the horses which are pastured thereHorseback riding Ecocamps
