Horseback Riding: rides in the high Andes Riding on horseback here is like living the odyssey of the Spanish conquistadors from almost 500 years ago. All the passes, landscapes, flora and fauna remain the same. Inhabited only by silent animals such as condors and pumas (mountain lion). The vegetation gets sparser the higher you ascend, finally reaching green summer pastures full of wild flowers and sparkling streams. There is no other way but horseback riding to travel here. The guides for these trips are Arrieros, cowboys, horsemen who run cattle herds over the Andes. They have learned the routes from their fathers and grandfathers before them. A musician usually travels with us. Horseback rides in the Central Andes last from 1 to 12 days. On longer trips we camp in the mountains in well prepared campsites and spend the evening around the fire. This is the perfect horse riding trip for those who enjoy outdoor recreation and soft adventure, or for family vacations. No previous experience of horseback rides is needed. |
