Controversial Williamson Co. animal shelter program ends
June 12th, 2008[Editor] There hasn’t been any Italian Greyhounds news lately, so I will post some general dog news.
An animal shelter pulled the plug on a program promoting the adoption of black cats and dogs after criticism that the event would have taken place the same week as Juneteenth, a state holiday commemorating freedom for enslaved blacks in Texas.
The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter planned to reduce adoption fees June 14-20 for black-coated animals to $25 through a “Black is Beautiful” promotion, the Austin American-Statesman reported in its online edition Wednesday.

World’s First Rescued Italian Greyhound Service Dog Earns Awards
May 22nd, 2008A Service Dog’s loyalty, elegance, and devotion earn her “Best in Show” and “Most Elegant Award” at the annual “Cinco de Mayo” celebration.
Gracie, an Italian Greyhound rescued from a life of disability and loneliness was adopted and nurtured back to life five years ago by Diane Dike, Ph.D. Gracie and Diane have a remarkable bond that is impacting the world. Both have overcome life’s challenges to bring hope to many. At the recent Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 3, 2008, in Edwards, Colorado, Gracie wowed the crowd with her obedience, elegance, and showmanship. According to Jeremy Behling, “She stole the show.” The Edwards Rotary Club sponsored the event, and according to Behling, Vice President of Alpine Bank and devoted Rotarian, “We were fortunate to have Diane, Gracie, and Paul Dike of Second Chance with Saving Grace present.”

Size matters at the dog park
May 12th, 2008My wife and I were trying out a dog park with our Italian Greyhounds and discovered this problem. Some Whippets decided to go after our dogs and it was very scary. After that scary encounter we never let our dogs loose in a dog park. We would find places away from the bigger dogs and it worked out better.
“The big dogs went after him like he was a rabbit,” said John Castle, owner of the small dog.
Recalling news stories about a Pomeranian that was killed by another dog recently in a dog park, he realized, “It could happen to me.”

Children’s book author in Edwards on Saturday

Investigation continues in dog breeder case
April 28th, 2008 [Editor] I have been hearing about case like this more and more. Good intentions that have gone wrong.
Some of the dogs had mange, other skin diseases, infections and injured limbs. The dogs — which included Boston terrier, Chihuahua, Italian greyhound, Maltese, papillon, Dalmatian, poodle and Norwegian elkhound breeds — were taken to the South Wood County Humane Society and other shelters in the state.

Investigators look for cause of Northampton house fire
April 24th, 2008[Editor] Very scary. I am sure it would be very hard to get my dogs out because they would freak!
In the confusion, O’Connell’s 2-year-old Italian greyhound named Toby escaped his house and there was a frantic 20-minute search before he was located at a nearby medical building.

Event is for, by the dogs
April 12th, 2008Other faculty members and their pets, as well as students, made up much of the crowd. A boxer sniffed cocker spaniels. An Italian greyhound huddled in its owner’s arms. Daisy, who belongs to student Allie Scherer, come in a pink tutu. Pets and humans alike enjoyed the warm, sunny weather.“I think it’s awesome,” said Mike. “The students dreamed up this fundraiser on their own, without any input from us. They just told me this is when it’s going to happen, no questions asked.”

Best in Show: Dogs and their handlers pack the Convo for annual competition
April 8th, 2008[Editor]This article really isn’t about an Italian Greyhound, but… it has a nice picture of an Italian Greyhound. Couldn’t resist.
Corinne Kolzow is not old enough to compete against her peers, but she can play with the big dogs.
Kolzow, 8, of Elburn was one of the youngest handlers Sunday during the Kennel Club of Yorkville’s annual dog show at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center. The young participant has been showing dogs for nearly three years, but cannot compete at the junior level with handlers of her own age until she is 9 years old.
“As long as you can control the dog in the ring, you can be any age,” Hannah Kolzow, Corinne’s mother, said.

Ugliest Dog Competition 2008 Has a Winner
March 25th, 2008San Diego crowned its “ugliest dog” Sunday during the 13th annual “Ugly Dog Contest.”
Victoria, an Italian greyhound, won the contest for the second year in a row.
I am not sure how I feel about an Italian Greyhound being called ugly… but it for a good cause.
Dog pincher who used children jailed
February 4th, 2008Laredana Rain stole the $700 Italian greyhound pup from a Fountain Gate pet shop because her son, who suffered from behavioural problems, “was crying incessantly and wanted the dog”, her lawyer said.
Ms Rain, 34, of Narre Warren South, pleaded guilty in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to stealing the dog from Pets At Home on July 2.
Defence lawyer Jagdeep Jassar said Rain suffered from kleptomania.
