Welcome to the Animal Science Program at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center. The program is also part of the Animal Science Department at the University of Florida. The mission of the SWFREC Animal Science Program is to conduct research and disseminate information through Extension programs to assist Florida’s livestock industry to achieve efficient production. It is important that livestock producers manage their operation so they are efficient and remain compatible with the environment by maintaining or enhancing the natural ecosystem. Beef cattle are an important part of Florida’s agricultural industry. Beef cattle convert forages into pounds of beef. These calves, known as feeder cattle, are a high quality, desirable product. Beef cattle are raised in every county in the state, making a significant contribution to Florida’s agricultural income. However, income from beef cattle can be substantially increased through improved management practices and planning.
