OptiGen test for Spanish Water Dogs is available to determine Carrier Status for PRA.  All breeders should have their dogs tested before breeding and share the results!!!!  When purchasing a puppy, please ask your breeder for results of the OptiGen test!  OptiGen is now a mandatory requirement for CHIC (Canine Health Information Center)  For a list of dogs that have been tested, please go to www.offa.org and click on "search records"  in Breed, highlight Spanish Water Dog, under Reports, highlight "Progressive Retinal Atrophy"

BUYERS BEWARE.  The prcd form of PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) is a preventable Disease in the Spanish Water Dog. Some breeders are refusing to test their dogs through OptiGen and still others are testing too late. Due to some breeders refusal to test since it has been available in November 2006, there have already been carriers bred together unnecessarily. There will be more dogs who will go blind because certain breeders refused to spend the money to test their breeding dogs for carrier status.  Fortunately, some breeders have begun to test only after pressure from puppy purchasers and members of this club and the SWD Club after they already bred two carriers together unneccesarily. Be careful of breeders who advertise "eyes normal".  They must list the OptiGen prcd/PRA test. These are not reputable breeders who care about the breed. For dogs tested in the United States, please go to the OFA site. They have been warned for almost 2 years.  There are carriers in all lines. Since prcd/PRA is an autosomal recessive trait, all a breeder must do is breed at least one normal/clear.  If two carriers are bred together, chances are that 25% of the litter will have PRA and eventually go blind. If an affected is bred to a carrier, 50% of the litter will have PRA. If two affected are bred all of the puppies will have PRA.  Dogs with PRA will go blind.  OptiGen testing has been available since November 2006.  There is no excuse not to do the OptiGen test for prcd/PRA!!!  Putting pressure on breeders by not purchasing a puppy from parents who are not tested will force them to test and eradicate this terrible disease!!
