Shingleback Lizards are a
common sight on the roads in the southern parts of Australia as well as in pet
shops in eastern Australia.
Depending on were you live
the Shingleback Lizard is equally known as Bobtail Lizard, Sleepy Lizard, Pine
Cone Lizard, Bog-eye Lizard, Stump-Tail Lizard, Stumpy or Bobbi. Australia’s
indigenous aboriginals called them Bog-eye, Bogghi, Boggi, Bogi and Garbarli. German
names are Tannenzapfenechse, Tannenzapfenskink or Zappe. Herpetologists used to call them
Trachydosaurus rugosus or Tiliqua rugosus, sometimes Tiliqua
rugosa.
There is
probably no other
reptile with so many different names.
Outside Australia
Trachydosaurus are hard to find in the pet trade and are highly priced.
Most people who are
interested in reptiles believe that Shinglebacks are easy to feed and keep, and they are right - if you know how!
This site is about
keeping Sleepy Lizards in captivity, about their basic requirements, which should give
you a good introduction to keeping this fascinating lizard. |
