For more than a century, WALDO Farms has been focused on pig improvement through implementing the latest pig husbandry, health and scientific technologies.

WALDO’S PURSUIT OF SUPERIOR PORK MEAT QUALITY

¨       Backfat probing began in 1956. First U.S. breeding farm to Backfat probe.

¨       Loin tracing in 1960 followed by scan and ultrasound.

¨       Marker tested to create stress free herds.

¨       Provided genetics for USDA and University Market studies.

¨       Carcass and Meat quality measurements on over 2,300 pigs through 2003.

¨       Meat quality measurements on over 1,260 pigs since 2003 to build EBV’s.

¨       Provided foundation females for ISU high IMF Duroc research herd.

¨       Received a record 55 Super Sire awards from Hormel-NBS tests.

¨       Impressive results in NPPC-Hormel Japanese meat quality study.

¨       Waldo Nebraska SPF Duroc ranked at or near top in most performance and meat quality traits in NPPC Sire Evaluation Comparison.

¨       10 Years developing a terminal White Duroc and White Duroc component maternal line.

¨       Utilize only RN negative Hampshire to produce the HxD sire line.

¨       Long-term supplier of genetics for Niman Ranch producers for their niche markets.

¨       Using high IMF boars to produce meat quality lines for Korea and Japan.

¨       Incorporating IMF plus markers for meat quality line development.

¨       Began to marker profile all herd boars plus boars placed in commercial AI studs.

Ø  NC4R 298 ASN marker gene for growth

Ø  NC4R 298 ASP marker gene for lean efficiency

Ø  HMGA1 Associated with lean muscle rapid deposit.

Ø  CCKAR Associated with feed intake, growth or fat deposit.

Ø  PRKAG3 Associated with glycogen, high PH and color

Ø  CAST Inhibits proteases affecting juiciness and tenderness.

These markers plus the more important quantitative testing will be utilized to differentiate and develop separate lines for meat quality and for lean growth. We are satisfied that with diligent effort meat quality lines can possess good growth, feed efficiency and reasonable external fat. Lean growth lines can possess better than average meat quality.

Waldo’s pursuit of genetic excellence
in all economically important traits
continues into its second century.
