There are many different reasons why cat owners are simply going to love their pet cats.  With that being said, it is no big secret that one of the more common reasons is going to be because of their meowing.  But what about when your cat’s meowing is actually silent? Is Their Meow Really Silent?

Whenever your cat meows, there is a good chance that you will be unable to hear it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that their meow is a silent one.  In fact, most other felines and even some other breeds such as dogs will actually be able to hear your cat meowing. Cats actually have a very highly developed hearing that is able to hear anywhere between 50 and 60 kilohertz. 

Now compare this to humans who can only hear between about 18 and 20 kilohertz at the very most. This is one of the reasons why your cat’s meow may seem as though it is a silent one to you, but in all reality, it is actually not silent at all.  These are the meows that are going to be very audible to other animals and cats as well.

What Does a Silent Meow Mean?

Whenever your cat is making silent meows, it can mean that they are trying to tell you a number of different things.  For example:

They want your attention

The majority of the time, whenever your cat is making silent meows, it is their way of letting you know that they are ready for you to give them some attention.  Maybe you’ve been really busy and haven’t been able to give them as much attention as they need, or you have simply been ignoring them for a while. No matter what the reason is, your cat is ready for you to give them some affection along with petting them.  In fact, silent meows can actually be your cat’s way of demanding you to start giving them some attention.

They are hungry or thirsty

Whenever your cat is either thirsty or hungry, they can use their silent meows to let you know.  Since your cat does not speak any type of human language to tell you exactly what they need, these subtle verbal clues can be their way of trying to communicate with you.  Often times your cat is going to be just like you too. They may want a little snack from their favorite brand of tuna, very similar to how there are times that you want to get into your favorite bag of potato chips.

They want to go out

If your cat is inside and wants to go outside, silent meows can be them requesting that they are allowed to do just that, go outside.  This is going to be even more true if you have a cat that prefers to spend a good portion of their day being outside, possibly in the garden or the backyard.

They are excited to see you

When you compare cats to dogs, cats are not going to be anywhere near as expressive when it comes to using their vocals.  On top of that, it’s going to be a part of their personality as well. So whenever you get a silent meow from your cat after getting back from a long day at work or a nice vacation, it’s simply going to be your cat’s way of welcoming you back and letting you know how excited that they are to have you back.  If this is the case, your cat’s silent meow is simply going to be a nice, friendly greeting.

Your cat is sleepy

After a busy day of working, your cat is more than likely going to be very tired and be looking forwards to a nice, quiet sleep.  If the environment around them is a little noisy for them, a silent meow can be their way of letting you know that they would appreciate you lowering your voice, allowing them to relax and have a nice, peaceful nap.

And if you feel that your cat has just woken up from one of their naps, you need to keep in mind that cats are simply lay animals and are going to prefer to have much more sleep than you do.  With that being said, be sure that you are not judging your cat and comparing them to the human sleeping standards, as they are naturally wired to have more frequent naps throughout the day. So, when you do hear your cat silent meowing when they are trying to take a nap, try your best to lower the noise levels around them.

Whenever there is something wrong with them

One of the main reasons that your cat is going to silent meow is because they have something wrong with them and are trying to let you know that.  While it can range anywhere from a skin infection to a bad stomach ache that is bothering them, your cat is looking at you to give them the help that they require.  If this is the case and there is something wrong with your cat, their silent meow is ultimately going to be their plea for some help.

Deciphering Your Cat’s Silent Meow

When you see that your cat is silent meowing, how are you supposed to know exactly what is wrong with them and what you can do to fix it?  Whenever your cat silent meows, think of a baby crying. While you do not really know why they are crying, what you do want to do is try a number of different things until you find one that works.  Cats are the same exact way. Simply try different ways to fix what you think the problem may be until you find what works. If you are unable to find what works, then taking them to the veterinarian may be the best course of action.

If you have ever seen or even heard about the television show My Cat from Hell, you would have thought to yourself whether or not your cat could really have that type of hellish aggression and if it was a real thing in these animals.  When you think about it, you can’t ignore the fact that cats are still very related to some of the meanest and most fierce big cats in the entire world.

Now factor in the fact that every cat comes with some massive claws that only Wolverine or Freddy Krueger are able to rival, and partner it with some of the sharpest eyes that are able to shoot daggers right through your heart, and the only conclusion you can really come to is that there may be a reason why cats have gotten the reputation as being one of the entire planet’s meanest animals.  But at the very same time, does your cuddle bug really deserve a label as fierce as that? Or is the real cause of the matter the fact that your cat is able to have much more feline aggression than you could have ever thought to comprehend?

Feline Aggression:  The Symptoms

There is no questioning the fact that cats are simply natural predators.  And there is no predator in the history of Earth that is going to survive in the wild without some level or form of aggression.  While cats have been domesticated for hundreds and hundreds of years now, they do still possess that same exact predatory gene within them that they had before domestication was ever a real thing.  And while it can become extremely difficult to figure out how to manage your cat’s feline aggression, or in that case treat it, you are always going to feel much more confident if you are able to recognize the difference between the manifestations of their feline aggression.

Animal aggression, as defined by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is considered to be a violent or hostile exhibition of behavior by an animal in order to intimidate or potentially dominate another living organism such as a human or even another animal.  According to the very same organization, seeing aggression in domesticated cats is actually a very common occurrence. Matter of fact, there are less than one-third of all the cats who eventually end up living in an animal shelter who have been brought there due to their aggression. The cat’s aggression may be directed towards other cats, towards other pets within the household, or even worse, directed towards their owners and families.

So how are you able to tell if your feline friend has an aggressive tendency?

You see, feline aggression is going to come in one of three different behaviors.  These behaviors will include either defensive, offensive, ore what is known as overt.

Defensive Behaviors

If your cat is displaying what is known as defensive behavior (also commonly referred to as a defensive posture), it is going to be because they are trying to make themselves look much smaller.  On top of that, it is also going to put your cat into a much more protective manner than if they were to stand regular. If they are in a defensive posture, you may notice that they will crouch down, their ears will flatten, they will hiss, possibly turn away from you, they will raise their hackles, will swat at you, or can even tuck their head.  Besides all that, their whiskers may possibly retract as well.

If your cat is on the fearful side, their whiskers are going to be panned out in order to make an attempt at keeping a larger distance between themselves and the potential danger. Their pupils will become very dilated in order to help them assess as much environment as they possibly can.  In other words, your cat is pretty much letting you know that you need to start backing off or else they will start to defend themselves from you.

Offensive Behaviors

When it comes to offensive behaviors, which are also referred to as offensive postures, your cat’s pupils are going to become constricted.  This is due to the amount of heightened stimulation within their sympathetic nervous system, which will, in turn, trigger their fight or flight response.  The unfortunate thing about this, however, is that if your cat is on the more aggressive side, this is almost always going to trigger the ‘fight’ response that will be activated as opposed to the ‘flight’ response. 

This sudden surge of adrenaline or epinephrine is going to stimulate the pupils of your cat’s eyes to become constricted in order to better focus on a single target. This is what is known as a true characteristic of a very offensive cat.

Besides their pupils constricting, you may notice that your cat will also stiffen up their legs, especially their two in the back, as this is going to make them seem to be taller than they actually are.  On top of having stiffened legs, you may also notice that it will be combined with the backend being raised up with their back slightly sloping towards the head, appearing as though they are ready to pounce at you at any moment’s notice.  As if that weren’t enough, the cat’s hackles will also be raised up in order to give the appearance that they have a much more menacing look than if they were not raised.

Their ears can also seem to be flattened towards their back or even standing straight up, appearing to be listening for any sounds of fear that you may give off.  Finally, you will notice that the cat is going to glue their eyes onto you and slowly move towards you while letting out a growl. Their tail will even be stiff as well and you can even hear them growl, howl, or sometimes yowl at you.

Overt Aggressive Behavior

No matter or not you have a cat that is either offensive or defensive, overt aggression is normally going to be characterized as striking their target with their paws, either clawing it or swatting at it.  On top of that, you can rest assured that there is definitely going to be both fighting and biting. Scratching is also going to need to be something that you are looking out for if your cat has overt aggressive behavior.  Finally, your cat may even growl and shriek if they are suffering from this condition.

In some kittens who are considered to be really aggressive, they may roll onto their sides or back in order to expose all of the weapons that they have in their arsenal, which in this case are going to include both their claws and teeth.  In some cases, the cat will even attempt to grab ahold of their ‘enemy’ in order to draw it much closer to the waiting wide open mouth full of razor-sharp waiting teeth. Now partner that with the doubling pain that the dangerous claws will cause, and you have a very unfun situation.

Some of the More Common Reasons for Cat Aggression

While there are going to be many different reasons why your cat may become aggressive, the most common ones will lead to varying types of aggression from your cat.  When you are able to understand what is causing the problem, you can help prevent and even manage their unusual behavior.

Medical Condition

Many cats who have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, metabolic or hormone problems, nervous system disorders, and even liver disorders have oftentimes become much more aggressive.  While it is not known why this happens, the thought is that all of the changes in your cat’s brain are going to trigger some very serious aggressive tendencies.

They are in Fear

A lot of times when an animal is threatened and feels that they are unable to escape, it will get into something referred to as an unfamiliar stimulus.  For example, if you were to bring a new person or pet into the household. Essentially what your cat is trying to tell you is that they do not want anything to do with this new stimulus.  Just know that this is mainly based on previous experiences that were not necessarily very pleasing to them when they were a kitten.

They are Territorial

Just about every cat is going to be territorial.  They essentially want to keep their particular ‘space’ as their own.  When there is some type of activity that is perceived by them as an intrusion, it is very common to be treated with aggression.  

Some of the other more common types of causes for your cat displaying excessive aggression can include:

• Having an inadequate amount of experience playing with other kittens or animals
• Social or status dominance
• Experiencing overstimulation
• Redirecting aggression
• Being in pain
• Protecting their litter box
• Plain and old-fashioned predatory instincts

No matter what the cause maybe, if you feel that your cat is displaying an excessive amount of aggression, be sure that you contact your veterinarian to figure out what the best plan of action is.

There is no doubting the fact that kidneys are simply one of the more important organs within the body, not only for humans, but for your pets as well and yes, this includes your cat.  Kidneys allow your cat’s body to perform an extremely important function, that being the filtering of their blood and removal of any waste within that blood, some of which includes urea, toxins, and much more.  The waste materials that are filtered by the kidneys are then combined with urine and eventually excreted from your cat’s body.

Unfortunately, there are often times when a small insoluble particle will remain within their kidneys, which will then form into small crystals that are better known as renal calculi.  Over time, these small crystals will start to expand and grow, eventually turning into kidney stones. Here is everything that you need to know about kidney stones in your cat.

Kidney Stones in Your Cat

Kidney stones are extremely hard to detect within your cat as they are one of those diseases that are rarely going to be visible during their initial stages.  In fact, there is actually a really good chance that you will have no clue that your cat is actually having kidney stones until it has grown to a size so large that it starts to cause other serious problems, such as an obstruction or even an infection.

When it comes to kidney stones, they are going to be pretty common no matter what breed of cat that you have, but they are going to be much more prevalent within male cats that belong to Shorthairs breed.  Most of the other breeds of cats and female cats of this particular breed are going to have much lower chances of growing kidney stones during their lifespan. While the exact reason that this is true is not known, some of the researchers who have studied this have come to this conclusion based off of all the data that they have collected over the years.

As long as your cat’s kidney stones are able to stay smaller in size, they are not going to present any real problems.  However, when the stones do start to grow larger and become bigger in size due to an increased amount of waste materials and residue, it will become much more difficult for your cat’s stones to pass through their urethra and reach their urinary tract.  This is going to be the reason why there are often times obstructions and even infections when it comes to kidney stones in your cat. Essentially, these larger kidney stones are going to remain in your cat’s kidneys, preventing the kidneys from doing their job correctly.

Symptoms of Kidney Stones

Some of the more common symptoms to look for that will let you know your cat has kidney stones include:

• Vomiting
• A sudden loss of appetite
• A significantly changed eating pattern
• Having blood within their urine
• Urination has become painful.  If you ever see your cat starting to feel uneasy or even whimper when they are urinating, it is a good indicator that they are experiencing kidney stones.
• Pain in the abdomen.  If you notice that your cat isn’t able to get up or seems to be in pain, be sure that you contact your vet and check with them.  While not all of the abdomen pain is going to lead to a kidney stone, when partnered with the other symptoms listed here, it is a good indicator that kidney stones are present.
• UTI (urinary tract infection).  Whenever your cat is passing urine in smaller quantities and more frequently, it is an indicator that they are possibly dealing with a UTI.  As with the abdominal pain, this is not necessarily going to mean that your cat is experiencing a kidney stone, if other symptoms are present, it can be a good indicator.

If you have noticed that one or more of the above-mentioned symptoms are present within your cat, be sure that you take your cat to your veterinarian as soon as you can in order to have them looked at and further examined.  Even if kidney stones are not the cause of their problem, whenever symptoms such as abdominal pain or a urinary tract infection are present, they are going to require some type of medical intervention.

Causes of Kidney Stones in Your Cat

The main reason that your cat is going to experience kidney stones is due to the presence of certain minerals within their kidneys.  During the filtering and excretion process, some of these minerals will be left behind. As these minerals start to buildup, they will become more noticeable and start to cause symptoms related to kidney stones.

When it comes to your cat, there are over ten different minerals that can be the reason why they have developed kidney stones.  While there are going to be many different reasons as to why your cat will have a presence of each of the different minerals, here is why they may lead to accumulating within your cat’s kidneys.

• Your cat has a kidney infection that was left untreated.  Some type of underlying infection of the kidneys will help prevent them from functioning properly, thus leaving behind minerals that will then start to build up and accumulate.
• Your cat has a bladder infection or urinary tract infection.  What this means is that minerals that should be excreted from their body are not going to be able to do so, leading to more mineral deposits being built up.  
• Whenever your cat’s calcium levels become too high, it will then start to mix in with their urine and blood.  With that being said, not all of it is going to be filtered and some of the particles will remain within the kidneys.  Having an excel level of calcium is more than likely going to be caused by your cat consuming the wrong type of food or foods that are going to be rich in calcium.  Unlike humans, your cat is not able to process very much calcium, meaning that if you are feeding them a calcium-rich diet, it can very quickly lead to kidney stones.
• Cat supplements that leave a higher, more alkaline pH level within the urine.  Similar to food, some of the supplements available for your cat are going to increase their pH alkaline levels within their urine.  Not all of this elevated alkaline level is going to be filtered out as quickly as you may think, meaning that there are going to be some trace amounts remaining.  Over time, these levels can build up and form kidney stones.
• There are certain genetic problems in certain breeds of cats that make them much more predisposed to having kidney stones.  For example, Shorthair males are one of the breeds of cats that are more genetically predisposed to having kidney stones when compared to other breeds of cats or even females of the same breed.
• Dehydration is one of the leading causes of kidney stones forming.  If your cat is not drinking as much water as they should be, the kidneys will not have enough fluid to flush all of the minerals and toxins out of their body.  As a result, some of these minerals and toxins are going to remain in the form of residue. This is the exact reason that it is so important for your cat to always have access to some type of water source that is refilled constantly, especially if you are living in an area that has hot and dry or extremely hot during the summer months.
• Some illnesses can lead to an excess buildup of mineral deposits within your cat.  However, this is going to be extremely rare when you compare it to some of the other symptoms that your cat can have.

Treatment of Kidney Stones in Cats

 While the treatment of your cat’s kidney stones is going to depend upon the actual size of the stone that they have, your cat’s age and the amount of discomfort that they are in, here are some of the more common types of treatments that are used to eliminate kidney stones in cats.  Often times, the treatment will even combine more than one of these types of treatments.

• Special Medicines:  If the stones that your cat is dealing with are not too large or obstructing their urinary tract, special medications are normally going to be enough to help the stones dissolve.  Once they have dissolved, they will simply be passed out of the body through urine. Often times, there will also be an antibiotic that will be prescribed as well, mainly in the case that your cat is also dealing with a urinary tract infection as well.
• Drinking more fluids
• Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy or ESWL:  This is when shockwaves are sent through your cat’s body to the kidney stones in order to break them up so that they are able to be passed through the urine.
• Surgery:  For more severe cases.

No matter what the cause may be, if you suspect that your cat is experiencing kidney stones, be sure that you notify your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Dehydration, or hypohydration as it is more known in the medical world, is a very serious and even potentially life-threatening situation that can affect your cat.  While it is not very commonly worried about, dehydration can and will arise whenever your cat experiences an excessive amount of electrolyte and water that is removed from their body.  In other words, if your cat is not taking in enough water and electrolytes, they are going to be at risk for becoming dehydrated.

Cats are very similar to most of the other mammals on the planet in the sense that they too are composed of nearly 60% water.  While dehydration is able to be chronic (meaning that it is not going to be very serious but will last for a longer amount of time) or acute, which is going to be much more serious and require some type of immediate intervention by your veterinarian, it is also able to affect all types of cats not matter what their age or breed may be.  With that being said, it is going to be cats that are younger, older moggies, and especially cast who are dealing with some other types of medical conditions that will be at an increased risk for suffering from dehydration.

Dehydration in Your Cat: The Symptoms

While there are going to be some behavioral and visual symptoms to signify that your cat is experiencing dehydration, there are also going to be several tests that can be done in order to help diagnose their dehydration.  Here are some of the more common symptoms to look for if you feel that your cat may be dehydrated.  

• Eyes:  your cat’s eyes will start to appear sullen, sunken and ‘dull’, or even drowsy.
• Lethargy:  they will appear to be lazier than normal, as well as sleepier and not as interactive or wanting to play with you.
• Heart rate:  they are going to have an elevated heart rate.
• Panting:  while cats are able to pant, they hardly ever do so.  That being said, when you see them breathing very fast with their mouth open, it is a sign that they are overheated and dehydrated.
• Gums:  your cat’s gums will start to feel as though they are tacky and dry as opposed to moist.
• Not drinking: you may have noticed that your cat is not drinking water or that they are even drinking an unusually large amount of water.
• Constipation:  this will occur as your cat’s body will be trying its hardest to conserve what little water is already in their system, meaning that it will start to try and reabsorb as much water as possible from feces as it is passing through their colon.
• An infrequent amount of urination:  be sure that you are checking how often they are using their litter box.
• Loss of appetite:  your cat may start to refuse eating.

If you are more experienced when it comes to owning a pet cat and feel that your cat is dehydrated, you may want to consider performing some more tests at home in order to figure out if they are dehydrated or not.  But if you are not comfortable doing extra tests on your cat at home and on your own, it may be wiser to seek out the help of your veterinarian.

Dehydration Risk Factors in Cats

As with most living animals, dehydration is not going to be a good thing for your cat to have.  Even if there is no medical emergency that is triggered, long-term dehydration in your cat can potentially lead to kidney problems due to an insufficient amount of water available for flushing out extra minerals and other toxins from their body.  With that being said, there are actually some certain risk factors that will make your cat’s chances of becoming dehydrated much higher than normal. Here are the main factors for your cat becoming dehydrated that you should be aware of.

Vomiting and diarrhea

Vomiting and/or diarrhea for longer than one day are going to inevitably lead to your cat becoming dehydrated.  If your cat is having diarrhea issues, then much of their water is going to be lost through their watery poo, resulting in the loss of most of their fluids.  If the symptoms persist, it will be impossible for them to replace all of the lost fluids by simply drinking water.

Realistically, for your cat to become dehydrated through vomiting or diarrhea, they will have had to been doing so for longer than two to three days in a row.  If this is the case, then you will need to take them to the veterinarian in order to get some special fluids to help rehydrate them.

Certain medical conditions

There are some medical conditions that your cat can have which will trigger dehydration.  If your cat is drooling or has an increased amount of urination, they will, in turn, be losing lots of water.  This will then place them in a category that increases their risk for becoming dehydrated. Dehydration is also going to be associated with having a urinary tract obstruction or even heatstroke.  If you suspect that your cat may be suffering from either of these symptoms, be sure that you get them to your veterinarian as quickly as you can for further testing.

Dried food

If you are feeding your cat a dried food diet, they are going to be at an increased risk for becoming dehydrated.  This is because the average dried food diet is only going to provide your cat with about 40 ml of water, but you need to keep in mind that your cat needs a minimum of 200 ml of water every single day, meaning that your cat will need to drink at least 160 ml of water to get to their daily minimum, which is a lot of water for your cat to drink.  In fact, most cats will simply not do that. On top of that, if your cat is a fussy drinker, there is pretty much no chance that they will get anywhere near that volume of water.

The main problems with cats not drinking enough water stems from the fact that they have evolved from their ancestral desert animals and throughout history, cats have always been able to get the amount of water that they require on a daily basis through the prey that they eat (such as small rodents).  What this means is that your cat is not programmed to start drinking a lot of water and will struggle trying to compensate if they are on an all dried food diet. If this is the case with your cat, you may want to consider switching them over to a diet that contains moist foods as this will help reduce their risk for becoming dehydrated.

Kidney failure and diabetes

Both kidney failure and diabetes can cause your cat to urinate much more frequently, meaning that they are going to end up losing a lot more fluids.  It is going to be very hard work to try and make sure that they are replacing all of the fluids that they are losing.

Treatments for Dehydration in Your Cat

If your cat is suffering from being dehydrated, they are going to require treatment from a skilled medical specialist, such as your veterinarian.  The entire aim will be to replace all of the electrolytes and fluids, as well as to properly diagnose and then treat the underlying cause of the dehydration.  Your veterinarian will administer subcutaneous or intravenous fluids to get them hydrated again, and then they will run some specialized tests to help them determine what the cause for the loss of fluids really is. 

When your cat gets to this stage of dehydration, water by itself may not necessarily be sufficient to get them hydrated. If this is the case, your cat will require a balanced electrolyte solution. This is due to their dehydration not being solely about losing water.  It is also going to be a problem with their electrolyte balance within their body. If this electrolyte imbalance is not rectified, their body will not be able to properly absorb any of the water that they are consuming.

Depending upon the severity of their dehydration, it may potentially be necessary to give your cat special medication to help prevent them from being sick or prevent the diarrhea, as this will help them to not lose as much fluid from their body.

There is a good chance that you will be required to continue your cat’s rehydration treatment after you have gotten them back home.  You will be given syringes, needles, and even some special fluids. Just remember that these special fluids are not just water and should only be administered under the direction and guidance of your veterinarian.  You will be shown exactly what you will need to do and exactly how to do it. Just be sure that you stick to the directions that are given to your by your veterinarian to avoid any unnecessary complications from occurring.
