You will also want to make sure that the perch placement does not allow for your bird’s tail to rub on any part of the cage or fall into the water and food dishes.

• Your Bird’s Water and Food Bowls

• Your Bird’s Hygiene

When it comes to birds, they are naturally a clean animal.  This means that you will need to do a daily cleaning of their entire cage, including the floor, food and water bowls, and any toys that they may have.  This will help to prevent any type of problems with their leftover food spoiling, as well as permit you to inspect their cage floor. • Your Bird’s Cage Liners

When it comes to material to line your bird’s cage with, there are several different materials that are appropriate, as well as readily available.  For example, materials such as paper towels, newspapers, or even some type of plain cage lining paper is going to be preferred over things such as chopped corn cobs, wood chips, sand, or even kitty litter.  Why the substrate on the bottom of their cage is important, is because if the substrate is absorbent, it will soak up any kind of blood or droppings that would let you know about a potential health problem. My parakeets love it. For larger birds such as conures you may add some small fruit pieces. These treats DO NOT take the place of a daily meal and should only be served 3-4 times a week.

Ingredients

• 2 tsp. hot water
• 3 tbsp. peanut butter
• 3 tsp. honey
• 1 1/2 cups bird seed
• 1 sheet wax paper

Directions

Add the peanut butter and honey into a mixing bowl, then fold with a rubber spatula until you can’t see the honey anymore.Then add the bird seed and fold until no peanut butter is visible. If the seed is running out of peanut butter to stick to, you may add small amounts of PB at a time. Add the two teaspoons of hot water to the mixture, then fold once more with the rubber spatula. Let sit in bowl for 5 minutes, then fold for 30 seconds. This mixture should be gritty and lumpy. Take 2 small containers (for example, seed bowls…but make sure your bird still has access to food and water!!) and pack the mixutre into them. Store on the top shelf of your freezer for approximately 6 hours or overnight. When you take then out of the freezer, put the container face-down on top of a sheet of wax paper and pound on the bottom until the contents fall onto the wax paper. Do the same for the second container. The mixture should be slightly hard, but still a little soft. Push the mixture down as flat as you can, but be sure that you don’t press it down too thin. For larger birds, you may cut the mixture out into small shapes with a cookie cutter, and for smaller birds you may roll it into little balls or use the mini cookie cutters. Cut small holes in the tops of the shapes with a knife or fork. Preheat your oven to its lowest setting. Once the oven is preheated, use a basting brush to baste the shapes and balls with honey. Place them on the cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes. Once the shapes are out of the oven and COOLED, serve the balls to your smaller birds. If you have larger birds, draw a peice of yarn through the holes and hang at different levels from the top of the cage, make sure to remove the yarn as soon as the treat is gone so your bird doesn’t eat it. If you are worried about the yarn altogether,you can sit in the same room and watch TV while your bird munches on the treat in order to make sure that he doesn’t eat the yarn.
