How to Pick the Best Costume for Your Chihuahua

When it comes to finding the right costumes, one of the best methods is to actually shop online. This will give you not only the best available costumes that are extremely popular out there but also a good variety to choose from so you can ensure that your dog’s the only one in the neighborhood with the costume that you choose.

There is a common concern when you’re trying to dress up your little pooch, and this is that not all costumes are designed to fit all dogs. Some cat costumes can even be made to fit your beloved little Chi. Therefore, you want to ensure that you size them (we’ll get into that a little bit). So where can you shop? There are numerous pet clothing and costume stores out there in order to choose the right costume, so you should jump on it right away.

With the above being said, many people make the mistake of ordering from the wrong sites that aren’t local. Do keep in mind that if something is shipping from overseas to the United States (China for example), then you can expect your package anywhere from 4-8 weeks, depending on various factors of your order (clothing, material, etc.)

You have to realize that they have their own clearance and inventory to deal with from their warehouse, then they have to load it into a large shipping container to be shipped to the United States. Once it’s brought to the United States, Customs has to clear the container and unload it, and then it can be in-route to your doorstep. Therefore, it’s best to order your little pooch’s costume early, and the earlier the better.

Most sales for chihuahua and pet costumes actually occur earlier in the year and they can actually go up before they go on clearance for the Halloween season. So this means that the best times to usually order the costume (other than right after Halloween when prices crash) is usually in the late spring to summer before the autumn months.

Sizing Up The Right Way

Another one of the biggest myths that people come up with is that one size fits most means that a certain costume will fit your chihuahua. You need to realize, that just because something is meant for your toy breed, that the size you order may be meant for larger chihuahuas, and not the teacup variety. Therefore, it’s crucially important to make sure your dog is sized right for the clothes you order, and know what size to get them. Fortunately, we’re going to break it down a little bit for you.

Most chihuahuas range anywhere from XS (extra small) to XXS, but there are some larger chihuahuas that fall into the “small” size range. While you may not see many chihuahuas that are as big as a Jack Russel, it is possible that your dog’s girth and length can be longer than eight and a half inches. Make sure before you order a product that you measure your dog right as well because certain manufacturers of chihuahua costumes sizes can vary as well when it comes to exact measurements.

  1. Use a measuring tape to measure around the neck of where your Chi’s collar sits, just be sure to not include the collar in the width measurement. Write down the inches of this measurement.
  2. Use the tape again and measure the circumference around the chest of your chihuahua (right behind its front legs). This is usually one of the widest spots of your dog’s body. Keep the measuring tape snug, but don’t tighten it too much. Write this measurement down.
  3. From the base of the neck straight down the spine to the base of the tail, you can subtract approximately two inches (the average thickness from front to back of a chihuahua’s back hips) and write that measurement down. This will be the “length” of your dog.
  4. Double-check the sizes but don’t just rely on the next table we provide though, be sure to see what the specs on a costume you choose for your dog are accurate for the manufacturer’s size before you order your costume to ensure a proper fit.
