Are Raisins Safe for Pet Chinchillas?

Chinchillas are not like your typical rodents. They require a great deal of attention and care, contrary to what many people understand. When it comes to nutrition, this is no different. Chinchillas have susceptible digestive systems. Hence, they require a special diet if you want to elongate their days on earth.

Raisins have existed as long as we have known grapes. Actually, in the past, these nature’s candy was so valuable that they could be used to buy slaves! These dried sweet grapes have endless health benefits for the human body. They are naturally sweet and high in calories and sugar. When taken in moderation, they can aid in digestion, boost your iron levels, and strengthen your bones. Did you know that half a cup of raisins contains up to 217 calories and 47 grams of sugar?

While raisins are the go-to treat when you are craving for some sugar, they are not quite the treat for your furry friend. Although it would be a great experience to bond over a pack of raisins with your chin as you watch animal planet, their stomachs are not built for that kind of high calories. They can cause your pet severe stomach upsets.

So, as a pet parent, what can you feed your chinchilla?

In their natural environment, chinchillas are used to diets full of roughage as they are exposed to a variety of grasses. The basic meal for chins is hay! These mammals are used to having a constant supply of fresh vegetation to chew. Therefore, get them an excessive amount of high fiber grass and hay.

While there are various types of hay, Timothy hay is perfect for mature chinchillas with no specific dietary needs. Alfalfa hay is suitable for baby chins. You can also serve alfalfa as a treat for malnutrition and adult chins. It is also great for nursing chins. If your chinchilla is having allergic reactions to Timothy hay, you can replace it with highly nutritious, fiber-rich Orchard hay. Your chin is sure to munch it all up. Bear in mind that hay is your chins food, entertainment and bedding. Therefore, go all in without compromising on the quality.

Pellets are also a great nutritional choice for your chin. Serve your chin with pellets specifically made for chinchillas, low in fats and high in fiber. A perfect serving will be 2-5 percent of fat, 16-20 percent protein and 15-35 percent fiber. Pick pellets over mixes any day any time. Most chins will comfortably be satisfied by one or two teaspoons in a day, one in the morning another in the evening.

Water is life! Incorporate a bottle of water in the daily dietary routine of your pet. Clean the water container daily to avoid attachment of bacteria and replace the water in the bottle. Water is as essential for the chinchilla as it is for the owner.

Don’t be a boring pet parent. You can feed your pet a slice of an apple as a treat. However, experts advise that it should be given less than thrice a week as it can lead to diarrhea and bloating.

It can be overwhelming to figure out the perfect diet for your chinchilla. However, don’t let this get in the way of owning such a wonderful pet.
