Can You Mix CBD Oil in With Your Dog’s Food?

If you are thinking about giving your dog some CBD oil, there is a good chance that you have wondered about exactly how it is that you are going to administer it too them.  With that in mind, you may have also thought about simply mixing it in with their food but are wondering whether or not that is one of the acceptable ways to get them the CBD oil that you want to start giving them.  With that being said, the answer to the question of whether or not you can put CBD oil in your dog’s food is going to be yes, you can add CBD oil to their food. However, there are going to be some certain things that you will need to keep in mind when you are adding CBD oil into their food.  Here is everything that you will need to know about adding CBD oil into your dog’s food.

Mixing CBD Oil into Your Dog’s Food

When it comes to CBD oils, they have been designed for being ingested, so when you do mix some in with your dog’s regular food, it can be an outstanding way to cover up any flavors that the CBD oil may have.  This is going to be a good thing as there are many dogs out there who are not necessarily fans of how CBD oil tastes.

Another method that you can practice in regard to getting your dog their CBD oil, is to simply add a few drops of it onto one of your dog’s favorite treats.  This way they will be getting all of the health benefits of CBD oil, as well as their favorite treat.

If you are unsure of how much CBD oil you should be giving your dog, another way to make dosing as easy as possible, is to crack open a CBD capsule and then mix that into your dog’s food.  This will help you with the dosing but cover up any flavors that your dog may not like as well.

No matter how you decide to get your dog the CBD oil that they need, what you are going to need to keep in mind is that the CBD that your dog has consumed is not going to be able to take any type of effect until it has been digested by them.

How Ingested CBD Oil Works on Your Dog’s Body

Very similarly to humans, your dog also has an endocannabinoid system too.  It is this system that is composed of 2 different cannabinoid receptors, or CB1 and CB2, as well as endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-AG.  Your dog has cannabinoid receptors that can be found all over their entire body, and this includes throughout their GI tract too.

Even though your dog has cannabinoid receptors throughout their body, the CBD that they consume is not actually going to be binding to them like the anandamide and 2-AG will.  Rather, the CBD is going to activate some other molecular pathways that will eventually end up stimulating their endocannabinoid system through an indirect method.

After your dog has consumed the CBD oil that you have given them, that oil will then be broken down and the compounds that are found inside it will then began to get absorbed through your dog’s stomach and their intestines.  Once this happens, it will then activate the receptors that are found throughout their GI tract, and even enter into your dog’s blood stream which will then transport it to the rest of your dog’s body.

Now you need to keep in mind that whenever CBD oil is taken all by itself, it is going to be much quicker and easier for your dog’s body to break it down when compared to CBD oil that was taken with food or treats.  And if you give your dog CBD oil when they have an empty stomach, their body will also be able to break it down much quicker than when it is consumed with or after food.

Essentially, your dog will benefit from the effects of ingested CBD much slower than having CBD oil that has been taken sublingually, or underneath their tongue.  This difference in availability is mainly due in part to the fact that when your dog ingests CBD oil or other products, those products are going to need to be broken down by their digestive system before they are able to benefit from their health benefits.

However, when it comes to CBD oil that is administered sublingually, the health benefits can be felt much quicker as it is absorbed directly through your dog’s mucus membranes that are underneath their tongue.  If you are able to administer CBD oil this way, the effects should be felt within the first 15-20 minutes or so.

What all of this means is that if you have noticed that your dog is in any type of pain from acute symptoms and needs some fast relief, the best way to help them would be to administer heir CBD oil right under their tongue, as opposed to adding it onto their food or their favorite type of treat.  The only downside about administering CBD oil to your dog in this fashion though, is that most CBD oils are going to have a very bitter taste, meaning that there is a very good chance your dog will not like the flavor or how it tastes. If this is the case, it can potentially be much more difficult to administer their CBD oil to them in this manner.

While you are able to add CBD oil to your dog’s food, if they are suffering from any acute symptoms and need relief as quickly as possible, there are better methods for administering CBD oil to them.  But if your dog is not showing any signs of acute symptoms and you are trying to get your dog to benefit from some of the health benefits that CBD oil will provide for them, adding the oil to their food is a perfectly fine way of getting them to consume it.
