Stay Off Chinchillas When They Bark
Chinchillas do not usually bite. However, when they are agitated, they tend to bite. If you try to make contact with your Chinchilla and instead of reciprocating your gesture, it resorts to barking, the best thing you should do at that point is stay away from your Chinchilla and give it some time to get relaxed. While letting it relax, you need to find out why it is agitated and barking. Some of the factors that might be responsible for its aggressive state include;
An Injury: One reason chinchillas get agitated, and bark is an injury. While it might be very difficult to get close to your Chinchilla when it is barking, you could take a close look at it to notice if it has any swelling, bruises, or signs of cuts around its mouth and nose.
A Change in Environment: A change in the environment might be responsible for getting your Chinchilla agitated. This can happen because of a change in its play area, a change in the position of its cage, or a change in its daily routine. When a chinchilla goes through change, this change is usually accompanied by stress. Due to this, they will need some time alone to adjust properly. While they try to adjust, chinchillas might keep barking and will have to be left alone.
They might be Grumpy: Chinchillas sometimes go through bad days. And when this happens, it is ideal to let them be on their own.
Chinchillas that Bark at Each Other Should be Monitored
Sometimes, chinchillas go through conflicts. This is usually expressed by them barking at each other. Once this occurs, a physical fight might be the next thing. This might also get one of them injured. Also, if you notice any issues of dominance, you will have to do all you can to keep chinchillas separate as a bark might end up leading to a fight.
Affection Should Come When Your Chinchilla Gets Relaxed
When your Chinchilla is calm, it will be more recipient of attention. This implies that you will have to wait for it to get calm before approaching it and trying to give it any form of care.
